International School of Zug and Luzern visit the Coca Cola Plant

August 4, 2017

By Cassidy & Alex, Grade 7 Students at ISZL
In Grade 7 Science this year we have been studying acids and bases. A highlight of our studies was a field trip to the Coca Cola plant near Zürich. Before going, we conducted a series of experiments in the school lab to find out more about Coca Cola, including its density and sugar content, and its acidity levels and how it affects your teeth.
At the Coca Cola plant, we were given a tour of the premises and taken inside the laboratory. We discovered the secrets of production, for example the use of phosphoric acid to achieve a tangy taste, and how the finished product is tested for Ph and sugar content, just as we had done in class! Other highlights included seeing the new design for the Fanta, and tasting some drinks that never made it into production. The Coca Cola field trip was a fabulous learning experience for us all and really brought our studies in class to life.
