The history of the GoldenPass

The idea of linking the tourist regions of Lake Geneva, Gstaad and the lakes of Thun and Brienz dates back to 1873. Existing railway tracks used distinctly different systems: metric between Montreux and Zweisimmen and normal gauge between Zweisimmen and Interlaken. This meant that single trains were not able to travel the entire distance between these regions.

Throughout the years various plans were made to facilitate uninterrupted travel. However, in 2008, MOB proposed an innovative solution. Rather than changing the tracks, the bogies – the removable carriages that support the coach – were modified instead. This allowed the train to move from one track type to another thanks to the gauge changing ramp built in Zweisimmen.

The GoldenPass Express Prestige compartments are characterised by their very comfortable, heated seats which enable the passenger to always face in the direction of travel. The Prestige area is raised by 40 centimetres allowing passengers to be fully immersed in the landscape.
