A WORLD CLASS LEARNING COMMUNITY
Welcome to the International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL) and thank you for your interest in our school. We encourage you to take the time to explore our website and to discover for yourself, why ISZL is recognised as one of the world’s leading international schools.
ISZL is an independent co-educational, non-profit day school serving the international community of Central Switzerland by providing a comprehensive education from Early Years to university preparation, from ages 3 to 18.
Our world-class learning community offers an exceptional educational experience and builds a connected, inclusive, inspiring environment for our students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff. It is a vibrant, multicultural and caring community that fosters a deep sense of community wellbeing.
As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, ISZL is authorised by the IB Organisation to offer the Primary Years, Middle Years, IB Diploma and Career Pathways programmes. In addition, students in Grades 11 and 12 have the option of taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams. All AP courses are audited by the College Board.
ISZL has been accredited by the prestigious and highly respected Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The school demonstrates that its academic programmes are of the highest quality.
ISZL is supervised by the Educational Authorities of the Cantons of Zug and Luzern and operates with their approval. ISZL is a member of the Swiss Group of International Schools and the Educational Collaborative for International Schools.
PROUD TO BE NON-PROFIT
ISZL is registered as a non-profit organisation (Stiftung) in Switzerland and affiliated with a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organisation in the United States.
At ISZL, learning is both a personalised and holistic experience. Driven by the latest educational research, our programmes support the achievement and success of all students. Students at ISZL experience a broad, balanced and challenging programme in the wonderful environment of Central Switzerland which builds conceptual understandings and critical thinking, preparing students for a bright future.
ISZL is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and one of only three in Switzerland to offer all four IB programmes. We also provide Advanced Placement, BTEC and ISZL courses to ensure all students have the opportunity to create a personalised programme which best supports their learning. All of our courses aim to develop students who are successful, internationally-minded, creative and environmentally responsible individuals.
Learning at ISZL is framed around inquiry and developing deep understandings of the world from early years through to graduation. We are also committed to a rich language experience for all students which supports and develops both first languages and foreign languages throughout the school.
Our programmes balance academic and personal development for our students. We believe that by encouraging students to interact with their communities, both in Switzerland and beyond, their compassion and sense of communal responsibility is developed.
Sports and Extra-Curricular Activities
At ISZL, we believe that physical activity is necessary for the maintenance of the health and fitness of the students. The athletics programme highlights development of a students’ physical skills, their cooperative interaction with others, and the discovery and understanding of themselves and their limits. Physical Education is a compulsory part of the curriculum for students in the Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme.
In the lower years, organised events such as Games Day and Sports Day are planned for students in addition to numerous indoor and outdoor planned sports and activities. Swimming lessons are scheduled on a regular basis at pools near the Zug Campus.
In the Middle School, extracurricular sports include soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, skiing, track and field, volleyball, softball and golf. Students also are encouraged to participate in recreational clubs that focus on climbing, running, uni-hockey and yoga.
At the High School, competitive sports include soccer, volleyball, rugby, basketball, swimming, skiing, track and field, tennis, softball and golf. Numerous clubs are also organised seasonally and include sailing, kayaking, running, fitness, dance and yoga.
At ISZL we believe that student development extends beyond the traditional academic school day and that important learning and development should take place in other settings. All school divisions offer a range of clubs and activities that match the diverse personalities and interests of our student body. The core programme of clubs and activities incorporates elements such as athletics and fitness, music, drama, human movement, visual art, craft/design and teamwork and leadership. A balance of competitive and recreational activities are offered in these areas, as well as activities of individual and group natures. All teachers assist with clubs.
Students at ISZL enjoy attending our wide range of activities. These clubs allow students to have fun together and to build new friendships. Many of the activities are offered to a range of grade levels. By mixing with other students, participation in clubs can enhance the development of social skills. Most clubs run after school, but some are offered at lunchtime for our younger children. Clubs and activities are organised and supervised by ISZL’s teachers.
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL
The clubs and activities for our older students are organised and supported by our teachers. A number of additional activities, initiated by teachers or students, may also take place. Clubs and activities may involve travel to optional events such as workshops and festivals, and athletics tournaments. Travel locations may involve other European international schools and schools within Switzerland.
