About Shrewsbury House School
Shrewsbury House is a leading preparatory school where measurable progress for EVERY pupil is at the heart of all we do. Our results are exceptional, with boys gaining scholarships to the most competitive senior schools and thriving across academic, creative and sporting domains. However, our true success lies in the confidence, independence and love of learning that our pupils take with them beyond Year 8.
We are committed to ensuring that every boy is supported to make meaningful progress. This is achieved through small class sizes, specialist teaching, tailored support and rigorous assessment systems that track both academic outcomes and personal development. Our provision is adjusted in real time to meet the needs of each child – ensuring each boy is consistently supported and challenged.
The ISI inspection team recognised this, praising the strength of our holistic approach and identifying pupil well-being as a ‘significant strength’. Pastoral care is embedded in every aspect of school life. Each boy is known, valued and guided throughout his journey, enabling individual potential to be realised.
Joanna Hubbard, Tatler’s Prep Head of the Year, leads the school with vision and integrity. Her values-led leadership has shaped a culture of high expectations, warmth and innovation. The core values of respect, perseverance, integrity, compassion and aspiration underpin our curriculum and co-curricular life and are lived daily by staff and pupils.
A significant differentiator is the strength of our provision in Years 7 and 8. Boys benefit from subject specialism, meaningful leadership roles and the acclaimed Discovery Programme – a unique combination of STEAM, enterprise, outdoor learning, philosophy and creativity. This allows boys to mature into confident, capable learners who are ready for senior school both academically and emotionally. As The Good Schools Guide observed, “Senior boys rave about the Discovery Programme… it is incredible.”
Academically, Shrewsbury House adopts a problem-solving approach across the curriculum. Teachers are subject specialists who deliver rich, challenging content that encourages curiosity and critical thinking. From accelerated Mathematics and creative writing to AI ethics and science enrichment, boys are empowered to innovate and explore. Several pupils sit GCSEs in Mathematics and French before they leave, a reflection of our commitment to stretching individuals appropriately.
Our extensive co-curricular programme includes over 50 clubs each week, catering to a wide range of interests. The Athlete Development Programme supports elite performers, while music, drama and art provide creative outlets for all. Pupils engage in partnerships, PSHE projects and social impact initiatives – including our shoe donation campaign, recognised by the High Commissioner of Laos – which help to instil empathy and global awareness.
Our investment in staff development is equally strong. Weekly professional learning, mentoring and leadership training foster a motivated, reflective and forward-thinking staff body. Staff well-being is prioritised, which directly supports sustained excellence in the classroom.
This is a school where every boy is supported to thrive. Through a deliberate blend of academic rigour, personalised care and inspirational opportunities, we develop independent, curious and passionate learners, well-prepared for the changing world ahead.
